III. Deserts and Desert Life: Đề luyện tập IELTS READING (IELTS Reading Practice Test)
Deserts and Desert Life
Among the desert’s most famous survivors are camels, sometimes called the “ships of the desert.” They possess a unique set of anatomical features that make them perfectly suited to sand and drought. Their broad feet are equipped with thick pads of skin stretched between the toes, which keep them from sinking into loose dunes. Their nostrils are designed to close almost completely, shielding their lungs from swirling storms of dust and sand. On their backs rise distinctive humps, storing fat that can later be metabolised into water and energy. Unlike human beings, camels rarely perspire, an absence of sweat helping conserve precious body fluid.
Another master of desert adaptation is the fennec fox, whose oversized ears not only provide acute hearing but also dissipate heat. Many desert plants, like cacti, have evolved to store water in thick stems and reduce leaf surface area to minimize evaporation. Some species, such as the creosote bush, secrete chemicals into the soil to inhibit the growth of competing plants nearby—a phenomenon known as allelopathy. >> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
Human cultures have also adapted ingeniously to arid environments. Nomadic groups like the Bedouins have historically moved with seasonal water and grazing sources, using camels for transport, milk, and wool. Traditional architecture in desert regions often features thick mud-brick walls that insulate against extreme temperatures, and wind towers that capture and funnel cool breezes into living spaces. In modern times, technology has enabled large-scale settlement and agriculture in deserts through irrigation, desalination, and solar energy harnessing, though such projects raise questions about long-term sustainability.
Despite their harsh conditions, deserts are ecologically rich and sensitive. They host specially adapted flora and fauna, many of which are endangered by climate change, overgrazing, and urban expansion. Conservation efforts now focus on protecting desert biodiversity while supporting the livelihoods of indigenous peoples. As climate patterns shift, understanding desert ecosystems and the survival strategies of their inhabitants becomes ever more critical for our planet’s future. >> 🔥 Nhắn zalo 0905834420 join group zalo Hóng đề thi máy 4 skills để cập nhật đề thi thật 4 kĩ năng hằng ngày [Kèm giải & đề làm online]
