III. The origins of cinema: Đề luyện tập IELTS READING (IELTS Reading Practice Test)

The origins of cinema

The passage describes the origins of cinema, beginning with the illusion of movement created when a series of still pictures is set into motion. Early devices included a hollow drum turned by a crank, with paper illustrations viewed through slits to produce moving images. Variations followed, such as the Phasmatrope, which showed photographs of dancers in rapid succession. Later, the Praxinoscope improved the Zoetrope by adding mirrors at the center, while the Zoopraxiscope projected pictures printed on a disc so that images appeared on a screen. Further advances came with chronophotographs that recorded many images per second, and with long rolls of paper covered with photographic emulsion. Innovators then developed motor-powered cameras using celluloid film and sprocket systems. Finally, the Lumière brothers created a portable device able to project motion pictures to large audiences, leading to the first commercial exhibition of a projected motion picture and the arrival of cinema.

Cinema’s evolution reflects both technological ingenuity and cultural curiosity. Before celluloid film became standard, inventors experimented with various formats. In the late 19th century, Eadweard Muybridge’s photographic studies of animal and human motion, captured using multiple cameras, proved crucial for understanding motion sequencing. His work directly inspired Thomas Edison and his assistant William Dickson, who developed the Kinetoscope—a peephole viewer that allowed one person at a time to watch short films. Although popular, the Kinetoscope’s individual viewing format limited its social impact. >> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR

The breakthrough came with projection. The Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe, invented in 1895, combined a camera, film processor, and projector in one lightweight machine. Their early films, like Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory and The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, astonished audiences with their realism and scale. Soon after, innovators like Georges Méliès explored film’s narrative and magical possibilities, using special effects to tell fantastical stories. By the early 20th century, cinema had transformed from a scientific novelty into a dominant form of mass entertainment and artistic expression, paving the way for narrative feature films and the global film industry we know today.
