Mystery Drawing

Is the drawing of a young girl really the work of a famous artist?

On January 30, 1998, an art auction was held in New York City. One drawing was of a pretty girl, but it attracted little attention. The catalogue listed the work as a German drawing done in ink and coloured chalk, dating back to the early 19th century, with styling borrowed from the much earlier Renaissance period. A New York art dealer, Kate Ganz, purchased the picture for $21,850. The price had barely changed almost ten years later when a Canadian collector, Silverman, bought it. The drawing might actually date from the Renaissance, she thought. Ganz herself had mentioned Leonardo da Vinci as an influence on the artist. Silverman wondered whether it was the work of the great Leonardo himself, but discovering a Da Vinci is truly rare. At the time of Silverman's purchase, it had been more than 75 years since the last authentication of one of the artist's paintings. It had been claimed that Leonardo da Vinci never made a major work like this, and neither were there any known copies. The drawing, executed in ink and coloured chalk on vellum, depicts a young woman in profile, her gaze directed slightly downward. Her features are delicate, and her hair is styled in an elaborate braid, reminiscent of portraits from the Italian Renaissance. Silverman, intrigued by the possibility, began a quiet investigation. He consulted with art historians, Leonardo scholars, and scientific analysts. The vellum itself was tested using radiocarbon dating, which confirmed it originated from the late 15th or early 16th century—the correct period for Leonardo. Further analysis of the pigments revealed compounds consistent with those used during the Renaissance. The chalk and ink showed signs of ageing that would be extremely difficult to forge convincingly. Perhaps most compellingly, a hidden fingerprint was discovered in one corner of the drawing. When compared with a known fingerprint from a Leonardo manuscript, experts noted striking similarities in the pattern's distinctive whorls. Despite this mounting evidence, the art world remained deeply divided. Some experts argue that the quality of the drawing, while beautiful, does not quite reach the masterful heights of Leonardo's other works.
